How long should a funeral slideshow be?

There's no single perfect duration. Start with where the slideshow will be shown, how much time is available and whether the photographs have enough room to be appreciated.

Start with the service, then choose the length.

There is no universal ideal duration for a funeral slideshow. If it will be played during a formal service, ask the funeral director, celebrant or venue whether a specific time has been allocated before you decide how many photographs to include.

For a service

Work backwards from the time available. A tribute that comfortably fits the program is better than one that has to be stopped early.

For a wake or gathering

If the slideshow will play informally, you may have more flexibility, but it should still feel intentional rather than endless.

For a keepsake

A personal memorial video does not have to follow a service schedule. Let the story and photographs determine the pace.

How do you know if it is too long?

Watch it in one sitting. If you start noticing repetition rather than individual memories, the slideshow will probably benefit from a tighter photo selection.

Don't rush important images

Viewers need enough time to recognise the photograph and the people in it.

Remove near-duplicates

Several similar photographs from the same moment can slow the story without adding much.

Match music naturally

The soundtrack can help establish sections and emotional pacing, but the slideshow does not need to fill every second of every song.
